Why Leather Gloves?
Leather is the ideal material for hot iron and fire cooking because the heat is less likely to come through to your hands. Thick leather can still be comfortable as long as it’s well-made. Leather gloves are also versatile in that you can use them for other things besides outdoor cooking. They can replace oven mitts for indoor cooking, or you can use them for yard work to protect against blisters and cuts, and scratches. Overall, leather gloves are a good investment.
A Little About Lodge
Lodge Cast Iron is a family-owned business in South Pittsburg, Tennessee.
Joseph Lodge founded this company in 1896 and originally called it Blacklock Foundry.
However, after the building burned down in 1910, Joseph rebuilt and renamed the company Lodge Cast Iron.
Over the years, Lodge survived several economic downturns and even thrived when other foundries were closing down.
And as business continued to grow, they built another foundry. The new foundry enabled Lodge to increase its manufacturing production by seventy-five percent.
Lodge makes cast iron and carbon steel cookware, though cast iron remains their primary production.
They offer a large variety of cast iron, including classic, enamel, chef, and Blacklock.
Additionally, Lodge carries bakeware, and several series, all of which are cast iron.
They also have many accessories and a line of cast iron grilling cookware.
Lodge continues to be a leading manufacturer worldwide and makes close to 2 million cast iron pans every month.
Answering Your Questions
Can you wash these gloves?
Lodge says you can hand wash them, but some people think you shouldn’t wash them because it will ruin them.
Do the gloves come in sizes?
No, they are one-size-fits-all. And if you have big or small hands, you might find them less comfortable.
How heat resistant are the gloves?
The Lodge website says they protect from ambient heat and the Amazon description says radiant heat. A few people commented on how they could pick up logs and move them around at a campfire, and others said they felt no heat when picking up their cast iron from the fire. However, others thought their oven mitts worked better when using these gloves to take their pan out of the oven. I couldn’t find a max temperature stated.
Are the gloves comfortable?
Some people said they were very comfortable, while those with big hands said they were tight. As one with small hands, I’m guessing the fingers would be too long making maneuvering the cast iron more challenging.
What are other ways to use these gloves?
People generally use leather gloves for all kinds of things: yard work, landscaping, and heat-related activities such as your fireplace, grill, smoker, or oven. They also work for welding or sweating pipes. These are tough gloves that protect your hands.
What’s the deal with some people saying the gloves aren’t heat-resistant?
I can’t explain why some people say their gloves are heat resistant and others say they aren’t. Possibly a third-party seller might be selling a fake. If you are worried about that, you might want to order them straight from the Lodge website. I’ve heard this kind of thing happens, but I’ve never experienced it. Here’s an article by Business Insider that talks about this very thing. In the article, they say your best bet when buying from Amazon is to buy products shipped from and sold by Amazon. And that is the case with these gloves.
How long will the gloves last?
The Lodge leather gloves are durable and should last a long time. The most common reason people replace them is that their gloves get too greasy. Some people have multiple pairs for home and camping.
What other accessories will I need for outdoor cooking?
Leather gloves are just one thing that will come in handy when cooking outdoors. A few other accessories you might think about are a cooking stand that can go in the fire, a charcoal chimney for preparing briquettes quickly, or some type of hook tool for lifting Dutch ovens or the Lodge Cook-It-All from the fire. I also wrote about accessories specifically for the Cook-It-All.

What Others Are Saying
These Lodge gloves primarily get high ratings. Here are the things people like most about them:
- Protect well against heat
- Still work great after two years
- Well-made
- Fits about any size hand
- Comfortable
- Great protection from fire
- A must-have for cast iron cooking
- Perfect for young Scouts cooking over the fire
- Heavy-duty
- Well worth the money
- Excellent as oven mitts
- Use for cast iron skillets, Dutch ovens, and other camp accessories
- Hands don’t get burned when sweating pipes
- Use for the fireplace, smoker, and oven
- No problem with putting my gloved hand in the fire to move the wood around
However, some people had a different experience with their gloves. By far, the two biggest complaints by a small percentage were that their gloves weren’t heat-resistant or Lodge used to make better quality. Here are the types of things they said:
- Can’t even remove a cast iron skillet from the oven because the heat went right through
- It seems to do the very thing it claims to protect against
- The quality used to be better
- Uncomfortable for big hands or thick fingers
- Too hard to clean
- A bit pricey
- Too long
- Don’t fit big or small hands
What Do I Think?
I don’t own these gloves, so I can only base my opinion on what Lodge and others say.
Overall, these seem like good-quality gloves that protect your hands and forearms from heat and fire. And if you do a lot of outdoor cooking, I think you will benefit from having a pair of heavy-duty leather gloves.
And Lodge makes a pair of heavy-duty leather gloves, but they aren’t the only ones who do.
So, do I think you need to have the Lodge brand?
No.
It’s not that I think there is anything wrong with the Lodge leather gloves; it’s just that Lodge is known for quality cast iron, not gloves.
That being said, I don’t want to give you the idea that I wouldn’t recommend them. After all, these gloves did get high ratings for the most part. And I trust they are well-made because Lodge has an excellent reputation for quality.
So, if you are looking for some leather gloves for outdoor cooking, I do recommend them. On the other hand, if you already have a different brand that works for you, then I don’t know if there is anything about these gloves that stands out other than the Lodge name.
Pros
- High reviews
- The Lodge brand name
- Protects from heat and fire
- Heavy-duty
- Well-made and durable
- Longer for forearm protection
- A thick pair of leather gloves brings peace of mind for outdoor cooking
- Has other uses
Cons
- May not be as heat-resistant as you expect them to be
- Only comes in one size
- Not easy to clean
Final Thoughts
Thank you for reading my Lodge Leather Gloves Review.
Hopefully, you know a little more about the benefits of having leather gloves (rather than another material) for outdoor cooking.
Thick leather gloves protect hands from heat and fire, and some people have multiple pairs because leather is so versatile.
Although other brands will probably work just as well (though I’d research first), I think Lodge is a good choice. And even though they aren’t known for their gloves, they still have a reputation to uphold.
Therefore, if you are looking for a pair of leather gloves for outdoor cooking, I can recommend the Lodge leather gloves.
