Heat Resistant Oven Mitts – 5 Styles

Cast iron gets hot, including the handles. So whether you’re using your stovetop or the oven, you need something heat-resistant to move the pan around. Are you looking for the best heat-resistant oven mitts?

Have you burned yourself because the heat from the pan went through your oven mitt before you were able to put it down safely? Or are you concerned with having the added protection an oven mitt gives you compared to a handle holder?

In this article, I will tell you about five heat-resistant oven mitts. And I will share with you what people liked or disliked about each mitt or glove.

Heat Resistant Oven Mitts and Gloves

All oven mitts are heat resistant to some degree. Many manufacturers will tell you what rating they give to their mitts or gloves for heat resistance and that is what you are looking for. Other factors are comfort, maneuverability, flexibility, fit, and quality.

When you put on an oven mitt, you expect to be protected from the heat and not burn your hands. Some come extra-long, so your arms are also covered. No one wants to burn themselves when taking things out of the oven or picking up their cast iron skillet.

Oven mitts and gloves come primarily in three materials: silicone, cotton, and polyester. All three materials offer good heat resistance; you just have to know what you want.

Colors: Fourteen choices
Size: 14.7 or 13.7 inches long
Outer material: Silicone
Fill material:
Care: Machine Wash

These silicone oven mitts have a quilted cotton lining to make them more comfortable while cooking. At 14.7 inches, these mitts are extra long for added protection. In addition, you won’t have to worry about losing your grip because the silicone material makes things easier to hold onto, meaning you will feel more in control. And who doesn’t like that?

  • very heat-resistant when holding or moving a pan
  • The longer length
  • Easy to clean
  • The soft lining
  • Easy to grip
  • Able to hold a cast iron dutch oven for over a minute right after it had come out of a 500-degree oven
  • Used words such as solid, safe, durable, tough, flexible, soft, and breathable

  • Too big and bulky, not flexible
  • Too slippery
  • Not easy to clean, with one person stating that flour got stuck in the crevices of the design
  • Lining too absorbent
  • Mitts tore
  • Unable to hold the cookie sheet without feeling the heat while they were taking off the cookies
  • Burned their hand when taking a cast iron pan out of the oven

I would not personally like these oven mitts because of the length. They would go up over my elbows, which is not something I would like. But others may think this is a great feature.

Big Red House Oven Mitts

You can use the Big Red House oven mitts to remove a pan from your oven, pick up a steaming pot, or use it on the grill. And the silicone striping is what gives it its non-slip grip. In addition, the lining is made of terry cotton, making it soft and comfortable. However, if you aren’t satisfied with these oven mitts, you can return them for a full refund.

  • Perfect length and fit
  • Terry interior was comfortable
  • Silicone strips for gripping and added protection from heat
  • Felt safe using
  • Better than all silicone
  • Used words like resilient, flexible, thick, and durable
  • Good selection of colors
  • The loop for hanging in the middle rather than at the seam
  • With cast iron these mitts were easy to manage with temps up to 500 degrees
  • Easy to feel where the edge of the pan was in your hand
  • Able to hold a sheet pan straight from the broiler for 3 minutes without discomfort

  • Thought the silicone strips would add an extra layer of protection but they didn’t
  • Mitts either ripped at the seams, or the strips started peeling off
  • Burned holes in their gloves within the first two months
  • Used words such as stiff, big, clumsy, and uncomfortable
  • Cuffs were too small and wouldn’t work for larger hands; the hinge point between the thumb and index finger was in the wrong place making the gloves less comfortable
  • Mitt stuck to foil

I like the look of these oven mitts and might give them a try if I needed to replace mine.

Large and Medium

Polyester, cotton

If you want even more heat resistance, then these gloves will give it to you. The outer materials are silicone, providing non-slip protection and an ultra-high-strength aramid fiber that resists high heat, cutting, acid, and alkali. The interior is made of polyester-cotton for softness, comfort, and an additional layer of protection. And for storing, you will find a loop for hanging on the inside cuff. These gloves are ideal for high heat cooking, baking, or grilling.

  • Great heat resistance
  • Machine washable
  • The length; one person said it was long enough to protect her arm from the oven door
  • Gloves didn’t burn when in the fire
  • Could use the gloves when heating stones in a 600-degree oven
  • Hands didn’t get too hot when searing a steak on a 625-degree grill and using the gloves to move the meat around
  • Used words like sturdy, nice fit, worked as intended, good value for the cost

  • The medium size was too big, and the length was shorter
  • Large was too big and someone said they had dropped things because of it
  • Couldn’t use the glove when wet
  • Gloves not as heat resistant as they expected and one person said not to expect to be able to hold a 500-degree handle longer than necessary
  • After one winter of using the gloves with the woodstove, they were falling apart and is going back to leather

Since I have small hands, I probably wouldn’t like these gloves, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t recommend them.

These 100% cotton oven mitts are extra long to protect your arms. The manufacturer follows the sewing standard of 1-inch 8-9 stitches, ensuring it is durable and high quality. • Fits small hands perfectly
  • Good heat resistance
  • Loved the length
  • Used words such as adorable, cute, sturdy, nice quality, comfortable, pliable, and thick
  • Can roll down if too long
  • Too cute to use

  • Not impressed with the heat protection
  • Stiff and inflexible
  • Smelled bad

The ratings were high, but that doesn’t convince me people bought these mitts for their heat resistance. I think the main reason they bought them was that they liked the fox pattern. I use 100% cotton oven mitts on cast iron, but I probably wouldn’t feel comfortable carrying it anywhere while hot. So taking it out of the oven and putting it on the stove is about all I do.

Everyone needs a good pair of oven mitts. And if you cook with cast iron, heat protection is a must. Most people have at least one set in their kitchen.

In my almost forty years of cooking, I think I have only owned two pairs of oven mitts. One Christmas, seven or eight years ago, my son gave me the pair I use now. I love them but have no idea what the heat resistance is. However, I have no problem taking my cast iron out of the oven at 450 degrees, and that’s what’s most important to me. I also like the puppet style best, and as far as material? I have only used cotton, but I think I would get a combination of cotton and silicone if I ever need to replace those I have now.
