Cast iron gets hot, including the handles. So whether you’re using your stovetop or the oven, you need something heat-resistant to move the pan around. Are you looking for the best heat-resistant oven mitts?
Have you burned yourself because the heat from the pan went through your oven mitt before you were able to put it down safely? Or are you concerned with having the added protection an oven mitt gives you compared to a handle holder?
In this article, I will tell you about five heat-resistant oven mitts. And I will share with you what people liked or disliked about each mitt or glove.

Heat Resistant Oven Mitts and Gloves
All oven mitts are heat resistant to some degree. Many manufacturers will tell you what rating they give to their mitts or gloves for heat resistance and that is what you are looking for. Other factors are comfort, maneuverability, flexibility, fit, and quality.
When you put on an oven mitt, you expect to be protected from the heat and not burn your hands. Some come extra-long, so your arms are also covered. No one wants to burn themselves when taking things out of the oven or picking up their cast iron skillet.
Oven mitts and gloves come primarily in three materials: silicone, cotton, and polyester. All three materials offer good heat resistance; you just have to know what you want.

- Easy to grip
- Able to hold a cast iron dutch oven for over a minute right after it had come out of a 500-degree oven

- Not easy to clean, with one person stating that flour got stuck in the crevices of the design
- Lining too absorbent
- Mitts tore
- Unable to hold the cookie sheet without feeling the heat while they were taking off the cookies

I would not personally like these oven mitts because of the length. They would go up over my elbows, which is not something I would like. But others may think this is a great feature.

- Used words such as stiff, big, clumsy, and uncomfortable
- Cuffs were too small and wouldn’t work for larger hands; the hinge point between the thumb and index finger was in the wrong place making the gloves less comfortable

- Can roll down if too long
- Too cute to use
CONS – WHAT PEOPLE DON’T LIKE
- Not impressed with the heat protection
- Stiff and inflexible
- Smelled bad
The ratings were high, but that doesn’t convince me people bought these mitts for their heat resistance. I think the main reason they bought them was that they liked the fox pattern. I use 100% cotton oven mitts on cast iron, but I probably wouldn’t feel comfortable carrying it anywhere while hot. So taking it out of the oven and putting it on the stove is about all I do.
Conclusion
Everyone needs a good pair of oven mitts. And if you cook with cast iron, heat protection is a must. Most people have at least one set in their kitchen.
In my almost forty years of cooking, I think I have only owned two pairs of oven mitts. One Christmas, seven or eight years ago, my son gave me the pair I use now. I love them but have no idea what the heat resistance is. However, I have no problem taking my cast iron out of the oven at 450 degrees, and that’s what’s most important to me. I also like the puppet style best, and as far as material? I have only used cotton, but I think I would get a combination of cotton and silicone if I ever need to replace those I have now.
